teaching english as a second language
my teaching experience is vast. after receiving my TEFL certififcation in cusco, peru, i went on to live/work/teach in chile, argentina, italy, japan, and australia. my admired adaptability came from being thrown into a plethora of classroom environments: large lectures for the chilean naval personal, small groups of teenagers in peru, family learning in italy, one-on-one lessons in japan and multi-cultural classes in australia. i've gained experienced in a wide range of english language topics: daily and conversational english, standardized tests (IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, CAE, and EIKEN), business english, specified vocabulary (yoga and art, naval terminology), and writing (general and academic).
teaching philosophy
when we feel comfortable, we speak better, we articulate our thoughts with more freedom, we try out new sentences on others, we ask questions, we want to continue conversing. when i was learning spanish, i discovered how much better i would speak with someone i felt comfortable with and in contrast, how i shut down with someone i didn't.
this then became the foundation of my teaching methodology:
create an environment to make my students feel comfortable in the classroom.
i am a conversationalist and believe that communication is a pilar to the human experience. there is much power in practicing asking questions to open up new conversational pathways. through a welcoming and encouraging environment, my students feel safe to try out new vocabulary, answer big questions, make mistakes and try again with smiles on their faces.
